Changing my home router

I want to change my home router to something more powerful than the standard one provided by my ISP.
What details will I need in otder to do this?

If you are on broadband, it will likely be your PPP authentication credentials (username and password) that you’ll require.

If you are using an Ethernet type broadband, it could well be just an IP address that you’ll need.

The easiest way to obtain this information is to ask your current ISP the following -

“I’m looking to use my own router, please can you supply me with the connection’s details for me to enable me to use my own router on your service”.

You might come into some initial resistance with bigger operators such as BT, where the support agents will have to work out which department can provide you with that information.

The information you will receive may be something along the lines of

username: telephonenumber@ispname.com
password: a1b2c3d4e5

or

username: accountname@ispname.com
password: 1a2b3c4d5e

I hope this helps.
